Overview of The Department of European Languages

The German section was established in the year 1988, and has been since then one of the most successful at the department of European Languages of the University of Jordan. In first and second year of specialization, the German section starts offering the language courses to prepare the students for studying the advance courses: literature, tourism, economic, mass media, and other courses. Rationale - Arab countries import technology from and export more and more goods to German speaking countries. If we want these increasing economic relations to be a success, persons with a profound knowledge in German are a must. - The tourist industry will develop more and more in Jordan given its rich tourist attractions, whether it is its natural beauty or the historic and cultural sites, which are very attractive for the educated german tourist. The tourist industry is going to be successful only with German speaking tourist guides and German speaking employees in hotels and tourist agencies. - The presence of Jordanian nationals with a profound knowledge of the German language facilitates the commercial, cultural and scientific exchange between Jordan and the German speaking countries. Components of the Study Plan: The Study Plan for the B.A. Degree in German and English Language and Literature consists of 144 credit hours Goals : 1. Maintain and develop distinctive education in German Language that enables every student to attain the highest level of professional and personal development which s/he can achieve. 2. Equip all undergraduates with knowledge, and with both practical and general transferable skills, to enable them to play a leading and creative role as professional German teachers, translators, government civil servants, tourist guides and private sector employees. 3. Graduate students able to conduct research and to enrol in postgraduate studies in order to meet the needs of the market for German speaking professionals. 4. Provide courses which offer breadth and depth in their subject matter in the various fields of German. 5. Ensure that students acquire an understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities and of the impact of cross-cultural dimensions on both the societal and global levels. 6. Respond through its program to the needs of public and private sectors by providing the community with graduates with high standards and abilities to use the German language in professional fields like translation, business & economy, media, tourism and teaching. 7 . Develop connections and relations with national, international and German organizations and institutions in order to exchange experiences.
