Faculty of Foreign Languages
"The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind." - Khalil Gibran

Welcome to The Faculty of Foreign Languages
Ahlan wa sahlan (welcome) to the Faculty of Foreign Languages, which is the site of many voices, of many visions, and of many genuine souls and big hearts. We are the guardian, or, perhaps I should say, the bastion of many European and Asian languages which bloom in all of their glory in our lecture halls and corridors. Our students spend four years of their budding lives learning a language of their choice, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and Turkish. It is true that they come to learn languages, but they also come to learn how to cross boundaries and crack barriers, how to walk out of one culture and into another, and at times how to be in all cultures at the same time. As Toni Morrison has beautifully said, "language can tell us how to see without pictures. Language alone protects us from the scariness of things with no names. Language alone is meditation." Every language the students learn is entwined with culture, imbued with its values, attitudes, and perceptions, and woven with its stories and images. Throughout their educational journey, the students also come to learn the language of kindness, the language of friendship and tolerance, the language of the heart, all of which hold up all of the sky. Truly, the insights and learnings we harvest help us work more inclusively across political, cultural, ethnic, religious, generational, and gender differences. The Faculty of Foreign Languages is a faculty that glories in waves of languages and in diversity and we are the richer for it. One foot lingers in distant countries, but the other is firmly planted here in Jordan, home-grown and home nurtured. We are steeped in a wider world, yet unmistakably we are Jordanians to the backbone. We are all about humanity and the significance of being a human with infinite variations and commonalities. We are all about making connections and discovering and building bridges. We are the womb of change in the future and of the mobilization and development of peoples all over the nooks and crannies of the world. In the Faculty of Foreign languages, we are citizens of the world; we are border-crossers and bridge builders; we are people of compassion, of intelligence, of grace and of humanity leading the way for the new generations. We dream, we inspire, and we speak truth to power. As Marge Piercy, the American poet, has beautifully said, "We seek not rest but transformation. We are dancing through each other as doorways." May the love and light of this place called the Faculty of Foreign Languages set you well on your journeys, be a beacon through the years, and illuminate your pathways all the days of your lives. Cheers
