Today, the Gansu Province of the People’s Republic of China presented a valuable collection of books to the libraries of the University of Jordan, during an official ceremony held on campus. The event was attended by an official delegation from the province, as well as representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Amman, as part of efforts to strengthen cultural and academic exchange between the two countries.
In her speech at the ceremony, Ms. Luo Min, Director General of the Department of Culture and Tourism in Gansu Province, emphasized that these books represent a cultural bridge that enhances the closeness between the Chinese and Jordanian peoples. She highlighted the historical and geographical significance of the province, which lies along the ancient Silk Road and is rich in a deep-rooted cultural heritage, much like Jordan, the cradle of civilizations. She also noted that the western section of the Great Wall of China lies within Gansu, reflecting the province’s profound historical and cultural depth.
Dr. Marwan Al-Jarrah, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages at the University of Jordan, expressed his appreciation for the continuous support provided by the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Cultural Center to the faculty and its academic programs. He affirmed that this book donation would serve as a valuable academic resource for students in the Department of Asian Languages and the Chinese Language Program, and would contribute to the faculty’s efforts in teaching the Chinese language and culture.
Al-Jarrah added that this initiative reflects the strength of the relationship between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the People’s Republic of China, highlighting the important role of books in enriching the university library’s collection and supporting students’ academic and research pursuits—particularly those interested in Chinese studies. He expressed his hope for further cultural and academic cooperation between both sides.
The ceremony included welcoming speeches, the formal handover of the book donation list from the Chinese side, and a variety of cultural segments, including a lecture on traditional Chinese medicine and a live demonstration of Chinese tea art.
In attendance at the event were; Dr. Malek Sawalha, Head of the Department of Foreign Languages; Dr. Yousef Khattaybeh, Coordinator of the Chinese Language Division; Dr. Israa Al-Mobaideen, Assistant dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languagesas, well as faculty members of the Chinese Language Division, a large number of students from the Chinese Language Department, and many invited guests.
