As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships with national institutions, the University of Jordan, represented by the School of Foreign Languages, paid an official visit to the Royal Jordanian Geographic Centre. The delegation met with Director General of the Royal Jordanian Geographical Center
and Head of the National Committee for Geographical Names, Brigadier General Engineer Muammar Haddadin, in the presence of Mr. Mohammad Abduljawad, Secretary of the Committee.
The visit aimed to explore avenues of cooperation in the standardization and Romanization of geographical names on maps and road signage, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to internationally recognized scientific standards, while preserving Jordan's cultural, historical, and linguistic heritage.
During the meeting, the Director General of the Centre outlined the scientific methodology adopted by the Centre, which is based on the Unified Arabic System for the Romanization of Arabic script, approved by the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN). The discussion also highlighted the importance of academic expertise in linguistics, translation, and language editing in supporting the Centre's work.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties emphasized the importance of continued coordination and agreed to explore practical mechanisms for future collaboration, including the linguistic review of selected geographical names when necessary and the possible inclusion of a representative from the School of Foreign Languages in the National Committee for Geographical Names. This cooperation reflects a shared commitment to institutional partnership and public service.
