Elementary 1A  ​ Is capable of the basic linguistic functions that are required of an overseas Korean learner (self-introduction, daily routine, current location, making purchases, weather, time of day, what one did yesterday, making an appointment, weekend activities, etc.) and can understand and verbalize content that is personal or familiar. Can use an understanding of approximately 160 words and basic grammatical structures to build simple sentences and can understand and write simple Korean for everyday use.



Elementary 1​​ B  Is capable of understanding and expressing oneself on topics in which an overseas learner should be able to make simple conversation (how one is doing, food, hobbies, transportation, getting directions, phone conversation, family, travel, introducing one’s home country, illness, social gathering, physical appearance, mood and emotions, future dreams, etc.). Can use approximately 400 words and basic grammatical structures to understand issues that are personal or familiar. Capable of simple interaction in Korean (listening and responding, not just listening) and can understand and write simple Korean for everyday use. 



Elementary 2A Is capable of engaging in extended conversation on topics covered in Sejong Korean 1 and 2 (occupation, things one likes, congratulating others, things to do, vacation plan, shopping, travel/visiting a friend, public etiquette, everyday habits, looking for an object, weather, making a request, house in which one wants to live, future dream, etc.). Can use approximately 700 words and basic/extended grammatical structures to understand and engage in simple conversation on a topic that is personal or official (to a limited extent). Can understand and write not only simple Korean for everyday use but also Korean for practical use (to a limited degree). 



Elementary 2B is capable of discussing topics that are appropriate for someone who is completing elementary Korean and moving on to intermediate Korean (how one is doing, life abroad, making an invitation, setting goals, cultural comparisons, expressing gratitude, using public facilities, making a reservation, personal experiences, cooking, movies and dramas, fashion, personality, feelings about a book/movie, etc.). Can use approximately 1,000 words and basic/extended grammatical structures to understand and engage in simple conversation on not only personal topics but also topics (to a limited degree) that are related to official/abstract situations. Can easily understand and write not only simple Korean for everyday use but also Korean for practical use (to a limited degree). Focus of assessment is the student’s completion of elementary Korean.



Intermediate 3A Capable of fluent conversation on frequently encountered everyday topics (career path, popular music, anniversaries, shopping, hobbies, holidays, making/refusing requests, emotions, electronic goods, wishes, etc.). Can read text that is personal or familiar in content and write a simple explanatory text based on an understanding of approximately 700 words and grammatical structures.



Intermediate 3B  Is capable of understanding and responding to content on relatively familiar social topics and areas of personal interest (travel experiences, apologies, cultural differences, urban life, etiquette and rules, companies of interest, news, clothing/car repair, languages and cultures, etc.). Can use approximately 700 words and grammatical structures to understand familiar social themes and cultures related to everyday life in Korea and write a short text that explains these themes through comparison/contrast. 



Intermediate 4A  Is capable of a certain degree of conversation within an official context and/or situation (symptoms of and treatment methods for illnesses, Internet/computer, hiring/job search, consumption patterns, first impressions, news/gossip, marriage, TV broadcast, experience with accidents, interviews, geography, etc.). Can use approximately 700 words, frequently used idioms, and grammatical expressions that have multiple meanings to carry out basic tasks that are necessary for social relationships (office life, etc.). Can read a text on a familiar social topic and write an objective description of said text.



Intermediate 4B Is capable of communicating within a professional/official context (life plan, health and exercise, architecture, nature, technological advancement, agreement/disagreement, natural disasters, making work-related orders, social changes, work negotiations, etc.). Can use approximately 700 words, frequently used idioms/sayings, and grammatical expressions that have multiple meanings to read a text on a highly abstract topic or that is related to one’s work and write a text that demonstrates awareness of literary style and the relevant context/situation. 



 Can understand familiar social ㆍ abstract topics and simple discourse in one’s profession or academic area. Can give explanations about unfamiliar social and abstract topics, or one’s profession or academic field and fluently give opinions. Can read and understand unfamiliar social and abstract themes about one's field of expertise, and can read and comprehend relatively short and simple literary work. Can write essays on unfamiliar social and abstract themes, or one’s own profession using correct structures of writing. the nature of genre.



 Can understand familiar social ㆍ abstract topics and simple discourse in one’s profession or academic field. Can logically assert one’s opinion on unfamiliar social and abstract topics, and fluently speak in detail regarding one’s own area of expertise. Can read and understand unfamiliar social and abstract texts about one's field of expertise and can comprehend relatively short and simple literary work. Can write logical essays on unfamiliar social and abstract topics or one’s area of expertise, and can write essays considering the characteristics of various genres of writing.
