Program Specifications

PhD in Literature / Program Intended Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of the PhD Program in Literature, students should be able to: ​
  1. Offering courses which provide breadth and depth in subject-matter within the fields of English literature,
  2. Maintaining and developing a quality education in English Literature that enables students to attain the highest level of professional and personal development,
  3. Ensuring that students acquire ample understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities,
  4. Responding through the graduate programs to the needs of the public and private sectors by equipping students with knowledge, together with the practical and general transferable skills which enable them to play a leading and effective role as professional English teachers, translators, press and media personnel, tour guides, government civil servants, private sector employees, etc,
  5. Exposing students to the impact of cross-cultural exchange on both national and global levels,
  6. Enabling faculty members to develop teaching materials and programs which cover agreed course objectives, whilst allowing them the academic freedom to decide on the appropriate means to achieve these objectives.
  7. Maintaining and creating appropriate opportunities for faculty members to pursue personal development, research, teaching and professional consultancy in accordance with the university agreed procedures.

2-   Examine and evaluate the theoretical premises underlying the critical analysis of literature, rhetoric and/or the teaching of reading and writing.

3-   Analyze the functions of texts and their relations with historical, social and political contexts.

4-   ritique a wide range of representative literary and rhetorical texts, including influential criticism of and commentary on those texts.

5-   Respond to peers’ work in fiction or poetry with constructively critical proficiency.

6-   Evaluate literary works based on critical and theoretical approaches to literature.

7-   Develop an individual specialization within the broader field of English studies and read widely within that specialization (genre, historical period, tradition, etc.), including both primary and secondary texts.

8-   Work efficiently, both independently and collaboratively, and uphold social and professional responsibilities.

9-  Demonstrate lifelong professional development appreciation and manifest serious commitment towards generating knowledge by using Information Communications Technology (ICT) efficiently.

10- Develop academic and teaching skills that will facilitate smooth transition into the academic and professional job market.

11-  Evaluate scientific literature and research methodologies, formulate ideas/hypotheses, and produce high quality thesis and scientific papers appropriate for publication in journals with high impact factors.
