PhD in Linguistics / Program Overview

Ø Background to the Program and Subject Area:

The program provides specialized knowledge in Theoretical Linguistics (Phonology, Semantics, Syntax, etc.), Applied Linguistics (Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Discourse analysis, etc.), and methods of research in linguistics. Teaching, media, banks and companies, and translation are some of the job opportunities available for students after graduation.
           
 
Ø Vision Statements of the Program:
The PhD in Linguistics Program aims to mentor students into researching fields of bilingualism, languages in contact, language acquisition, language variation, sociolinguistics, and the sociology of language. It provides students with the opportunity to study and to participate in research in a linguistically rich setting. 
Ø Mission Statements of the Program:
The mission of the PhD Program in Linguistics is to inspire students to acquire and practice critical thinking skills, capability to explore potentials of linguistic analysis and the study of linguistic competence, including course work in phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, language and cognition, etc. Students are trained to develop an original thesis and researchable project.
Ø Program Aims:
1.  Supplying the local regional market with qualified PhD holders in linguistics.
2.  Attracting student fellows from public and private universities in Jordan and the Arab World.
3.  Reducing the high costs and expenses of scholarships, especially if the program succeeds in developing a partnership with a university.
