On May 11, 2025, the University of Jordan hosted a celebration of Russian Language and Culture Day. The event was organized by Russian language professor Tatiana Glushchenko in cooperation with the Friends of Russian Culture Club “Nadezhda,” with support from the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Jordan, the Russian House in Amman, and colleagues Dr. Ekaterina Fedoseeva and Dr. Inna Zarovnaya.
Among the honored guests were the Deputy Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Amman, Ms. Kseniya Kirpichenko; the Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Dr. Marwan Jarrah; Head of the Department of Asian Languages, Dr. Malik Sawalha; Director of the Russian House, Mr. Aleksey Bukin; diplomats, university professors, members of the “Nadezhda” Club, students, and other attendees — over 250 participants in total.
Guests were welcomed with the traditional Russian custom of bread and salt. Following the national anthems of Russia and Jordan, the Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages delivered a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of cultural dialogue.
The Director of the Russian House spoke about the opportunities to study in Russia through government scholarships — Jordan receives around 170 quotas annually.
The program featured a virtual tour across Russia, poetry by Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, and Mahmoud Darwish, performances of songs such as “Katyusha,” “Matushka Zemlya/Mother Earth,” and “Kon/The Horse,” traditional dances, and vibrant performances by students and ensembles.
After the concert, guests explored a Russian exhibition, which included souvenirs, traditional costumes, kokoshnik headdresses, and a photo booth provided by the Russian House. Jordanian media covered the event throughout the day, publishing interviews and video reports.
The celebration was a powerful reminder: one cannot truly understand a language without exploring the culture behind the words. Events like these bring language learning to life — making it meaningful, exciting, and deeply engaging.
Russian Language Day became a heartfelt symbol of friendship between peoples and cultures. Jordanian students say — this is a day they will never forget!
